It’s not a secret to anyone that our political process is broken. We watch these people we don’t know, that we are told we elected, flounder around the political arena in suits we couldn’t afford, making statements about what’s best for us that don’t seem to bear out much logic. We struggle to understand why they can’t seem to get anything done. We try – we really do – to wrap our heads around how ‘principals’ and ‘facts’ became mutually exclusive.

Sawtooth economic performance characterized the year with occasional good news, like the strong end to the 2010 Christmas shopping season, was nearly always countered by news of a set back, such as unemployment rates unexpectedly returning to nearly 10% during the same period. The government’s stimulus efforts have run their course. The TARP program is officially over and tax credits for new home buyers have all expired. The economy now has to perform on its own without all that artificial stimulation. Will conditions improve in 2011? Which direction will interest rates head and when? What impact will the depressed housing market have on the economy? Will gas prices rise again? And which direction will the unemployment rate head? Read on for my national forecast to find out!

As the current session of Congress concludes, one storyline from the lame-duck session has yet to find the closure attained by measures such as START and DADT – the I-poker regulation effort floated by Nevada Senator Harry Reid. Word first emerged from the Senator’s camp that he was marshaling support for regulation of online poker in early December. Once seen as the currency of the World, since 2008 the United States dollar has steadily decreased in value against most currencies. This has started a process of dollar de-coupling where nations lessen their dependence on the greenback.
